Sometimes we run out of time in our meetings! Here are the updates we didn’t get to during our meeting this evening. For all things Super Neighborhood, check out our LinkTree.
Want to volunteer with the Super Neighborhood?
A neighborhood runs on neighbors. Most of what keeps this place good, a reported pothole, a filled meeting, a checked-on senior, comes down to people choosing to bother. This list is how we share that out. Pick what fits your life and check the box; you’re not signing up for everything, just the part you’ll actually do.

Air Alliance Resources
On June 22, a large fire broke out at Mammoth Recycling (formerly Elephant Recycling) near the Houston Ship Channel. It burned for about 24 hours before being contained, with no injuries, and it didn’t reach nearby homes. But burning tires releases fine particulates and heavy metals like lead and mercury, which can affect health.
Officials reported no concerning air-quality readings, but Air Alliance Houston, which found a marked change in the public monitoring data, is pushing for more transparency and asking why this facility is allowed to operate. Even now that the fire’s out, watch for symptoms like coughing or trouble breathing in the days ahead, especially for kids, older adults, and anyone with heart or lung conditions.

Understand the Draft FEMA Floodplain Maps for your Home or Neighborhood
Join the Harris County Flood Control District for a series of virtual information sessions about the recently released draft floodplain maps from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
If you’ve wondered what the updated draft maps show for your home or neighborhood, these sessions will help you understand where to look and what it means.
During the sessions, they’ll cover:
- What floodplain maps are and why they’re being updated
- What’s changing in the new draft FEMA maps
- How to use the online Navigator tool to find your property
- What happens next, and how you can stay involved
It’s important to note that, at this time, these maps are drafts and have no regulatory or insurance impacts.

Live near MacGregor Park? Researchers want to hear from you.
Texas A&M’s School of Public Health is studying how MacGregor Park shapes community connections and well-being in our area, and they’re asking residents to weigh in. It’s a 10–15-minute survey; you just need to be 18 or older, and you don’t even have to visit the park to qualify. As a thank-you, you’ll get a $10 gift card by email a week or two after you finish.

New Train Camera – brought to you by the Eastwood Civic Association Trains Committee
We have one train camera at Eastwood and the Galveston Subdivision, which you can see here. We just added another on Polk St. at the East Belt, which will help many plan routes getting around the trains.
You can see the new train live feed here.
This is not a perfect solution, but you can at least check before attempting to use Polk St. to see if a train is parked.
