News Around the Neighborhood
Neighbor News: Houston Country Club Place
The neighborhood has been working together to repair and refurbish the HCCP neighborhood identification sign. The pole was repaired, and a fresh coat of paint was added. Also, congratulations to this month’s Yard of the Month winner, Robert Gallegos!

The HCCP Civic Club’s biannual Garage Sale on Saturday, April 25, was a success, drawing a great turnout and strong sales despite the overcast weather. Huge thanks to all the residents who donated items, the volunteers who set up and took down the sale, St. Francis of the City Church for hosting in their parking lot, and a special resident for their generous donation to the HCCP Beautification Projects Fund and for helping fix the canopy. Proceeds from the sale will support the Civic Club’s ongoing efforts!

Metro Updates
🚌 New Airport Service — Route 500 Downtown Direct
METRO has expanded its Route 500 Downtown Direct to now include Hobby Airport, in addition to its existing service to Bush Intercontinental Airport. The route now features six northbound and six southbound stops, creating a direct public transit link between Houston’s two major airports through downtown. The one-way fare is $4.50. The expansion is timed ahead of the FIFA World Cup this summer, which is expected to bring a major influx of travelers to the city.
💳 New Fare System — RideMETRO
METRO launched its new RideMETRO fare system, replacing the old METRO Q Fare Card and Q Mobile Ticketing App. Customers can now tap or scan to pay using the RideMETRO Fare Card (physical or virtual), credit/debit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or cash. METRO Q Fare Cards cannot be used after April 4.
- Regular fares remain $1.25 for most METRO services, with a discounted fare of 60 cents. Park & Ride commuter express fares range from $2–$4.50 depending on where you board.

Houston City Council actions in March
HPD-ICE Coordination Ordinance
On April 8, the council passed a 12-5 ordinance limiting how long police could detain people on civil immigration warrants and eliminating a rule that allowed officers to wait 30 minutes for ICE agents. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s office then threatened to revoke about $114 million in public safety grants unless Mayor John Whitmire reversed the measure, leading to a 13-4 vote on April 22 that significantly walked back the original ordinance.
City budget and $170M deficit
The city is facing a more than $170 million budget deficit when the fiscal year ends in June, as budget season gets underway and the ICE funding fight intensifies the financial pressure.
Renaming Cesar Chavez Boulevard
On April 1, the council discussed renaming the boulevard to Dolores Huerta Boulevard, with the mayor supporting an expedited process that includes a 30-day neighbor review period.
District C Special Election Underway
A special election to fill Abbie Kamin’s seat produced no majority winner among seven candidates, sending Joe Panzarella and Nick Hellyar to a May 16 runoff.
FIFA World Cup 2026 preparations
The city expects to spend about $65 million in grant money on public safety initiatives for the upcoming World Cup matches in June, which have become entangled in the ICE funding dispute.
